MOUNTING JIG

Date: 2006

Client: G3 Genuine Guide Gear

Challenge: G3 had been making a mounting jig for its Targa line of bindings. The jig was being sold at a loss. With the advent of the new (Targa Ascent) binding, with a revised hole pattern, an opportunity arose to make a new mounting jig that could be used to mount the entire G3 binding line, allow the jig to earn revenue, and improve the ski tech’s experience. The existing jig also required servicing if dropped.

Solution: Interviewing ski techs from across the continent, we were able to gain a clear picture of what was good about existing jigs and what was desireable. We were able to introduce a jig that maintained the brand language of G3, while incorporating the tech's workflow right into the tool.

By replacing the expensive metal parts with robust plastic replacements, the new jig integrates moulded-in instructions and error reduction, lightness of weight and precision in the only polymer-based mounting jig on the market. All of this at a fraction of the manufacturing cost of the previous, less effective jig.

Responsibilities: (With the highly-talented G3 Engineering Team) Problem definition, cost / part  audit,  expert interviews, user interface design, CAD, material specifications
